General Objective

To enhance competencies of Health Science Librarians in modern information technologies and its applications in libraries.

Specific Objectives

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

1. Describe the modern information technologies available to upgrade and access the required Health Information. 2. Demonstrate skills in the use of these technologies to handle information resources .

3. Describe methods/ techniques to assess precise requirement of the users and having complete access to the web resources.

4. Explain applications and use of Internet, On Line searching (Medline, Popline, Pub Med etc.) and Email services for sharing the health Information resources.

5. Describe application of multimedia, electronic publishing and bar code system.

6. Provide demo of new softwares in the field of library science and digital environment.

Participatory with lectures, group discussions, practical demonstration, assignment and hands on practice.

Librarians, Assistant Librarians, and Documentation Officers, Information Scientists persons handling the information working in health science libraries. 

Course Report

The National Documentation Centre (NDC) of the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW) organized Eleventh Training Course on IT Application for Information Management in Medical Libraries. The course was inaugurated by Dr.(Mrs.) Meerambika Mahapatro, Reader and Faculty In-charge, Dept. of Social Science, National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (NIHFW). She welcomed all the participants to the Course and hoped that there would be a lot of interaction and exchange of views/cross fertilization of ideas. The course was coordinated by Sh. Salek Chand, Senior Documentation Officer and co-coordinated by Mrs. Hanskumari. Many Participants working in various Health Libraries and Information Centers from all over India attended the course. Many eminent resource persons from diverse fields opened up their reservoirs to knowledge for the participants. A few among them were Prof. Uma Kanjilal, Head, Deptt. Of Library & Information Science, IGNOU, New Delhi; Dr.(Mrs.) Anjana Chattopadhyay, Director, National Medical Library, New Delhi; Mr. Gaurav Kishan, Programmer, NIHFW; Mr.J.P. Shivdesani, Research Officer, NIHFW; Dr. Satyender Kumar, Senior Documentation Officer, JNU; Mr. Sukhdev Singh, Technical Director from NIC; Sh. Salek Chand, Senior Documentation Officer, NIHFW; Mr. Jagmehar Singh, NIHFW, New Delhi. The entire course was based on participatory approach. All the participants also presented their activities done by them in their organization. During the Course, a field visit was also arranged to the Parliament Library & AIIMS Library, New Delhi. Prof. Deoki Nandan, Director, NIHFW, New Delhi concluded the course with the recommendations to strengthen and implement the achievements of the training course in their respective placement of duty.

Training Outcome

The participants would be able to use Modern Information Technologies in Libraries.

Road Map for Future

The proposed training course is being conducted regularly by NDC since the year 2000. This training course will be covering the professionals from Medical Colleges, Sister Organisations and SIHFWs initially. Later on trained library professionals may organise similar course in their institutes for which all technical support may be provided by NDC.

As per National Rural Health Mission, the next training course will be organised specifically for Medical colleges & health organisations of 18 focused states.

Remarks

There is no course fee for the participant of this course. Boarding, lodging and TA/ DA expenses will have to be borne by the sponsoring organisations/ participants themselves.
